Recreating: The Italian BMT (only better!)

Italian BMT

As the holidays approach, life is probably a bit hectic and you’re looking for something quick and easy to have for lunch or dinner. While you could run out to the local Subway, last time I did that I was so disappointed by the lackluster flavor of a sandwich I used to adore, the Italian BMT. A quick pass through the local grocery store, though, and I have all of the makings to put together one quickly at home.

I pass through the bread aisle and find the white hoagie buns, looking for the softest I can find that are unadorned with any seeds. Next up I go through the meat and cheese area, picking up salami, black forest ham, pepperoni, and slices of my favorite sandwich cheese, provolone. One quick pass through the pre-packaged salad aisle to find shredded lettuce, and I’m on my way home to put together one of my teenage favorites.

I start with the salami, placing a layer along the bottom piece of bread. Next I cover that with pepperoni, then ham, then provolone. I top with a scant handful of lettuce, and to my pantry I go. I always had my sandwich topped with olive oil, and taking it one step further I pull out the garlic-infused olive oil and drizzle a bit across the lettuce. To finish I sprinkle a pinch of sea salt, a few cranks of fresh-cracked black pepper, and a sprinkle of oregano. Perfection! A quick meal that has so much more flavor than the local shop, and probably costs about the same.
