Maple Syrup

The past few weekends it’s been nice out, so the hubby and I have walked to Cafe San Jose to enjoy a bit of sunshine and a spot of breakfast. Almost every morning, one of us gets something that calls for maple syrup, which always brings on a bout of laughter.

Why the laughter? (more…)

Perfect Companion for Spaghetti – Cheesy Bread!

December 11, 2010

Cheesy Bread

One of my favorite parts of going home again is not only the traditional Southern cuisine, such as country ham and biscuits and gravy, but having my family cook some of my favorites, such as Spaghetti and Meatballs. Having spaghetti and meatballs at Dad’s house means perfectly portioned meatballs by Dad, and yummy cheesy bread by his wife Mary (who also makes the spaghetti sauce and spaghetti for the Spaghetti and Meatballs).

The bread is, in one word, addictive. It’s a sandwich roll, buttered, garlicked (garlic powder), and a liberal amount of mozzarella cheese is added between the slices. They’re baked until the cheese and butter is melted, and the bread is a bit crunchy on the edges. The result is something that is in no way, shape, or form good for you, but you don’t care, because it is so damn tasty. And it’s a splurge that I get once or twice a year, so there’s no way I’m giving it up anytime soon.

Cookbook Review: Chef Paul Prudhomme’s Louisiana Kitchen

November 14, 2010

Crawfish Etouffe

Chef Paul Prudhomme’s Louisiana Kitchen was the cookbook I learned to cook from. Don’t get me wrong – I learned how to cook from my family, but this was one of the first cookbooks I ever used, which explains why I don’t think taking two hours to make dinner is a bad thing. The recipes in this book are delicious; I’ve never had a bad meal from Chef Paul. However, the first time I made the Cajun Shepherd’s Pie from this book, it took four hours. That wasn’t because I was in middle school, just honing my knife skills. It still takes me quite a bit of time (it might have been because I had an aversion to vegetables, and I minced the heck out of the ones that went into the meal). But as anyone who has ever had a slice of this pie can attest, it is completely and totally worth it. (more…)

And, wait, there’s still a pause?

October 10, 2010

Unfortunately, my computer decided to die on me Saturday morning. So instead of providing you with yummy recipes of stickies, I sat and stared, wondering what to do, how to make it better. I came to the conclusion that I couldn’t, so I’m now trying to get the data off the hard drive. Ironic that it died in the middle of my decision to back up the data.

So, apologies for the prolonged absence. We’ll hopefully be back to regular programming soon. In the meantime, keep your eyes on the Daily Nosh or the List for fresh content.

Dad's BBQ Sandwich

But I’ve been in the land of barbecue, eating a pulled pork sandwich a day. Vinegar-based barbecue sauce, sweet sauce, vinegared slaw. Yep, that would be Northeast Tennessee.

Beyond the usual, I also tried the German place I’ve been wanting to try for a while, Freiberg’s. It was delicious, and I’m sure to go back and have the Boulette Andreas next time I’m home. And another newbie, we tried Mona Lisa’s Gelato before I caught the bird that brought me back home. Of course there was the usual – country ham and Greg’s meatball sandwich. No Krystal this time, but I am sure I gained enough weight while there.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll share another Southern favorite that I had while there, Mom’s stickies. Stay tuned for a return to regular programming!
